About 9 out of 10 people with diabetes have Type 2. Most people with this form of the disease still produce insulin; the problem is their cells resist it. Insulin tries to take sugar into the cells, but the cells just don't respond. In response to these sluggish cells, your body produces more and more insulin, trying to overcome the resistance. Insulin resistance is the hallmark of Type 2 diabetes... it's where the natural hormone insulin becomes less effective at lowering blood sugar.
Lung function is also frequently compromised in people with Type 2 diabetes. According to a study published last month in Diabetes Metabolic Research Review, obese people who are not yet Type 2 diabetic can have poor lung function if their bodies have begun losing sensitivity to insulin.
Researchers at the CIBER de Diabetes y Enfermedades Asociadas, Institute of Health Carlos III, and the Diabetes and Metabolism Research Unit, Institute of Research of the University Hospital of Vall d'Hebron, Barcelona, Spain, looked at lung function in 75 morbidly obese women.
Fifty of the participants were diagnosed with slight insulin resistance, although none had full-blown Type 2 diabetes. Their lung function was tested with a spirometer, which measures the amount of breath people are able to blow out. Those with insulin resistance showed a reduced ability to blow air into the spirometer.
Obese people and parents of obese children need to address the problem, not only to prevent Type 2 diabetes but evidently to prevent lung problems that can actually precede a diagnosis of diabetes. School has started, and with it physical education classes... but why not do even more? When the children need a study break, instead of letting them play video games or watch television, why not take the whole family out on a walk? If your children are teenagers who would be mortified to be seen with you, take them to a mall and agree upon a spot to meet after an hour's walking time, or get together with the use of cell phones. Someday they might thank you for it.
