Diabetes mellitus, more commonly known as diabetes, is a group of metabolic diseases wherein the patient has high blood sugar levels. The symptoms of high blood sugar levels are - frequent urination or polyuria, too much thirst or polydipsia, and increased hunger or polyphagia.
Diabetes disease is of three types - Type-1 diabetes (insulin-dependent diabetes) happens due to the body's failure to produce insulin and requires the person to inject insulin. Type-2 diabetes is a result of insulin resistance. In this type, the cells fail to use insulin properly and it is known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes or adult-onset diabetes. Gestational diabetes wherein a pregnant woman, who previously never had diabetes, has high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. Diabetes can also include congenital diabetes (a genetic disorder), cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, steroid diabetes brought on by high doses of glucocorticoids, and several forms of monogenic diabetes.
At least 171 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes or 2.8% of the population. Type-2 diabetes is by far the most common and is a silent killer.
In ayurvedic medicines, cow urine has been used in the preparation of medicines for centuries. The recent scientific studies promise to give hope to millions of diabetic patients in the country and world over.
A three-member team of researchers in Bangalore, led by Dr. K. Jayakumar, professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Veterinary College under Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, has found that cow urine contains certain molecules that can fight diabetes. The team is in the final stages of identifying the molecule that secretes insulin. This is the first ever-scientific study on cow urine and its properties and these findings can change the diabetes treatment in India. Professor K. Jayakumar says that anti-diabetic activity of cow urine was tested on rats that were experimentally induced diabetes. These rats were orally administered small doses of cow urine daily and there was a noticeable difference in blood sugar levels in these animals while in the case of those diabetic rats, which were not administered cow urine, sugar levels remained the same. The professor said that they are researching to find that, if the increased insulin levels on the rats were result of a cow urine stimulating beta cells of pancreas, as in case of oral anti-diabetic agents currently available in the market, or if cow urine stimulated regeneration of pancreatic beta cells.
In their research, they have found that urine from cows has anti-diabetic properties and they are trying to analyze that particular molecule.
Cow urine contains various elements which are present in our body and required by our body. It tries to balance those elements if they are more or less hence re establishing the equilibrium for a healthy body. It is able to cure a number of diseases including skin diseases, diabetes and gastrointestinal disorders etc.
