Whole grains - why do I need to avoid them?
For most people, this is the first time they have been advised to stay away from whole grains. The truth though is, research is just beginning to show this may have been one big huge mistake advocating whole grains as a part of a good diabetic diet.
Previously, when a twenty year study conducted by the American Diabetes Association showed higher magnesium intake resulted in better diabetic care, the assumption was made since whole grains are higher in magnesium, the interpretation became whole grains would then deliver a boost to a diabetic's diet. But doctor's, mainly through trial and error and from patient feedback, are finding out that whole grains, just like sugar and fructose lead to a worsening of insulin resistance. This condition then leads to the common symptoms of:
intestinal bloatingfatigueincreased fat storagehigh triglycerideshigh blood pressurecontinuous unstable blood sugarsmental confusion/memory loss
So, if whole grains are now being vilified as a contraindication for diabetic care, what other types of foods are still high in magnesium which can be use on a diabetic's diet?
English walnuts or raw almondsraw pumpkin or sunflower seedsdried beans and legumes, especially good are black beans or navy beansdark green vegetables, especially broccoli or spinachraw organic cacao nibstofu
By adding these magnesium rich foods to your diet, you can now help prevent many difficulties which often do arise during a diabetic's future care. It is often reported without safeguards put in position now, many patients notice a worsening of all or any of these symptoms with time:
muscle and leg crampsheart palpitationsirritability and mood swingslack of attentiveness
So, speak to your doctor, get their advice first, and if you wish to give this a try, eliminate all sources of whole grains, wheat products and gluten from your diet for 7-10 days. Keep a log or journal of your daily
activities and post any of your comments or impressions if you notice any lessening of your adverse symptoms. If the program does seem to be helping you, give it another 2-3 weeks on this elimination diet and then share this journal on your next visit to your regular family doctor.
Many patient's who have gave this a try have realized exceptional results at reducing their difficulties with insulin resistance. Remember, high magnesium intake may be associated with fewer diabetic complications, but ingesting large amounts of whole grains does not seem to achieve this same result.
